Using hydrogen peroxide on vegetable crops

What is hydrogen peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a substance with a peculiar and somewhat pungent odour; it is similar in appearance to water (H2O) and is commonly called Oxygenated Water. Like water, it is made up of hydrogen and oxygen, but H2O2 has an extra oxygen atom and is unstable, which is where it gets its name from.


What are the benefits of using H2O2 on our crops? 

The functions and uses of H2O2 can be grouped as follows:

  • Adding H2O2 to our irrigation tanks and water supply systems reduces the growth of green algae, killing infectious agents, bacteria and soil diseases such as Pythium.
  • It is a high-level biocide (bactericide, fungicide, sporicide and virucide). 
  • It is a good disinfectant for all planting equipment: trays, pots, pipes, valves, etc. 
  • It removes chlorine and breaks down pesticides, herbicides and organic matter that can be found in our water supplies.
  • Its main function is providing oxygen to the system, particularly for those crops subject to excess irrigation, or which have been irrigated in a poorly controlled manner, producing rot areas that choke the roots and allow anaerobic bacteria and fungi to grow, thus weakening the plant. The provision of oxygen is most evident when it comes to the roots system.
  • It has relatively low phytotoxicity.
  • Hydrogen peroxide works because of its oxidative reaction function, meaning that microorganisms do not develop tolerance. As such, it is a very good agent for eradicating resistant strains.
  • It enables the sterilization of culture media at the end of the harvest or as preventive treatment.
  • H2O2 itself cleans stagnant water and removes unpleasant smells.
  • It has an impact on protein production at a cellular level, stimulating growth and foliar efficiency.
  • It is 100 percent biodegradable and leaves no residues upon decomposition.
  • H2O2 is effective over a wide Ph range and temperatures.
