Reduction in area of planted leeks

2014 was a very difficult year for leek growers across Europe. Three key factors have helped keep prices at a minimum level for a number of years: favourable weather conditions throughout Europe, increase in area devoted to leek production, and Russia’s embargo on European food imports.

It seems that this year producers have taken note of the challenges currently facing this sector. According to Babyplant estimates, 2015 will see overall leek production surface area fall by 10 to 15% in Europe.

All the leading leek-producing countries – France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, Poland – will see a reduction in cultivation area dedicated to both early and late leeks. The total area lost is estimated at approximately 2,000 ha Europe-wide.
